Tougher times for Washington County

By Tracie Sullivan

After years of economic euphoria in Washington County, people all over town are starting to hurt.

“There are a lot of people out there in pain,” says Carol Sapp, executive director of Southern Utah Home Builders Association. Sapp, who works directly with those in the construction trade and whose husband is also a contractor, talks with people in the business every day who are in financial stress. Especially those who didn’t plan for the downturn.

“Anyone who has been in this business for any length of time knows the market goes in cycles, and there will be those times when you live on your savings and food storage. You have to be prepared. It’s a good idea if the wife of a contractor has a good job as well to rely on during these times.”

Beating hunger with a
can-do attitude.

Creative structures using canned goods

Canstruction has been called the most unique food drive in the world.

In its 16-year history, this witty and wildly creative national design/build competition has generated millions of pounds of canned goods to feed hungry men, women and children in hundreds of hometowns across America. The premise is simple: Recruit 12-20 five-member teams to build — and an equal number of sponsors to fund — structures made of canned goods. Invite a few famous faces from the community to judge the competition and award trophies in categories of “best use of label,” “best meal,” and “structural integrity.” Then, after all the fun, donate everything to local food banks for distribution to those in need.

On the first day of the Washington County Fair, Utah’s Dixie will become the 77th community in the United States to host a Canstruction event. Some 20 teams representing local schools, businesses, municipalities, clubs and organizations have already been recruited. Among those who already have their creative juices flowing are the City of St. George, Wal-Mart stores and distribution center, St. George Lions Club Community Scout Troop #591, Volunteer Center of Washington County, Youth Courts in both St. George and the Hurricane Valley, 4-H, Albertson’s stores, Exit Realty, the St. George College 16th Ward and other schools and businesses. Sponsors of this event include St. George Lady Golfers, Utah Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (UAEMT), Friends of the Volunteer Center, Watts Construction, DATS Trucking, the St. George Rotary Club and others.
